Impacted Wisdom Teeth Can Cause What? 3 Problems to Know

Your last set of teeth to erupt is your third molars. They start to show up in the late teen years to early 20s, but they aren’t much trouble for some people. However, for many, they can be a problem. It’s possible they become impacted and don’t push through the gumline. This often causes serious discomfort, but ignoring them for too long can also lead to several health issues. Here are three that you should know and how your periodontist can help.

Tooth Damage & Decay

Plaque can accumulate on any part of your smile, including all the way in the back where your wisdom teeth are. Since brushing and flossing them might be hard or painful, you might not be as effective with your oral hygiene routine. When bacteria build up, you increase your risk for decay. It can then spread to the nearby structure or cause an infection as well.

Gum Disease

While your third molars might get a cavity, your gums aren’t free from harm! Plaque can find its way into the pockets between the soft tissues and roots. You may develop periodontal, or gum, disease.

This is an infection, but it can be troubling to deal with. You may notice inflammation, redness, or bleeding when you brush or floss. When left untreated, you risk tooth loss, so it’s important to tackle this condition in its early stages.

Ulcers & Cysts

The two points above are a couple that people often know, but many don’t realize that they might develop an oral ulcer or cysts as well. Impacted wisdom teeth can rub against your cheeks and cause a painful spot. While they go away on their own, they can persist as the structure brushes against the same place consistently.

Cysts are also possible as a fluid-filled sac can gather around one of your third molars. Over time, this can turn into a tumor. In most cases, they are often benign, but this opens a whole new can of worms that can be avoided.

Save Yourself the Trouble & See Your Periodontist

In the end, the best way you can avoid all of the health issues above is by going to your periodontist. They will be able to perform an oral examination and take X-rays to see whether your wisdom teeth will be or are trouble. If so, then they can help you remove them to get you the relief you deserve. That way, your oral health stays in great shape and you flaunt a confident smile.
