Dr. Franco Cordini

Originally from Trieste, Italy, Dr. Cordini started out with an MBA and a career in banking, but he knew that this wasn’t the fulfilling occupation for him. He went back to school, graduating from Creighton University School of Dentistry, earning his dental doctorate. He went on to complete extensive specialist training for periodontics at the University of Louisville. For the last 20 years, he hasn’t looked back!

When he isn’t treating patients at his dental office near Springhurst, Dr. Cordini is spending time with his family. In his free time, you can find him watching college basketball, listening to country music, and enjoying delicious food.

FAQs

What is the best way to find a professional who does dental implants?

You’ll most likely want to search for a periodontist (a gum and surgical specialist like Dr. Cordini), oral surgeon (also a surgical specialist), or prosthodontist (a dental restoration specialist).

While some general dentists have completed advanced dental implant training and are also able to complete the entire treatment process in-house, these three types of oral professionals receive extensive education about oral anatomy. Dr. Cordini, for example, has specialized knowledge about gum disease and how it can affect dental implants. This same education makes him quite skilled at gum grafting treatments. So, basically, a periodontist, oral surgeon, or prosthodontist is considered a dental implant expert!

What level of education is required to be a periodontist?

All dentists in the US (including periodontists, oral surgeons, and prosthodontists) are required to receive a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) or DDS (Doctor of Dental Sciences). Specialists like Dr. Cordini are additionally required to complete 3 more years of schooling, which usually includes residency.

In other words, a periodontist has all of the education a general dentist would – and then some!

Can I receive sedation for my dental appointment?

Yes! We’re happy to provide dental sedation for patients undergoing complex procedures, and for patients who have dental anxiety or increased sensitivity. We recommend scheduling a consultation before your treatment so you and Dr. Cordini can discuss the best sedation option for you, but here’s a brief overview of what we offer:

  • Nitrous Oxide. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild sedative and works well for many patients.
  • Oral Conscious. This means taking sedation by swallowing a prescription pill. Oral conscious provides a deeper sense of relaxation than nitrous oxide.
  • Administered through the vein with a needle, IV sedation is the strongest type. It’s well suited for patients with severe symptoms of anxiety or sensitivity.

What advanced dental technology do you have in Louisville?

We have many advanced technologies that promote patient comfort and diagnostic accuracy, such as intraoral cameras and 3D digital X-rays. But there are three devices that we’re particularly proud of!

  • CT (CBCT) Scanner. Think of this as an even more thorough and precise X-ray. The CT scanner is a big reason why we’re able to place dental implants in-house!
  • Soft tissue laser. Gone are the days of using a sharp scalpel to remove damaged or infected gum tissue! Soft tissue lasers are more precise and far gentler – you’ll experience very little bleeding (if any) after your treatment.
  • This machine enables us to design and fabricate dental implant abutments and crowns from our office. Receiving your restoration with CEREC means faster treatment times – crowns, for example, can be placed on a same-day basis!
